Chapter 179: Chapter 103: How could life be the same no matter who you spend it with?
Jiang Wanyi’s heart warmed at Chen Yuan’s words.
’When it came to taking care of Mili, Chen Yuan was even more dedicated than I was,’ she thought. ’The gap between us seems pretty wide.’
"Giving the kid’s dad a big thumbs-up. You’re amazing."
"Then would the kid’s mom please make something delicious to reward my stomach?"
"Go wash up. I’ll make you breakfast."
Chen Yuan glanced at the kitchen. The ingredients for breakfast were all ready; they just needed to be cooked.
"Okay."
Chen Yuan went to the bathroom. His hair was a bird’s nest from sleeping, so he washed it while he was at it.
When he came back out, fried eggs and pan-fried slices of steamed bun were already on the table. He walked over to the kitchen and peeked into the pan. Diced beef was sizzling away, seasoned with black pepper. It already looked delicious.
"The director’s take was a little shallow."
"What director?"
"The one from the movie we watched yesterday. If you were the main character, you probably wouldn’t have been so lost."
"I had to practice to get good at it, bit by bit. I didn’t know how to do any of this at first; I learned it all gradually," Jiang Wanyi said with a smile.
"But Mili’s already trained you well. You’ll definitely be a great dad in the future."
"What about now?"
Jiang Wanyi’s expression faltered for a second. She feigned annoyance.
"Right now, you’re a bad dad."
"I come over on the weekend to put Mili to sleep, and I’m still a bad dad?"
"Bullying the kid’s mom... doesn’t that make you a bad dad?"
Putting down the spatula, Jiang Wanyi lifted up her shirt, revealing her soft waist.
"Look what you did."
Chen Yuan saw it. The spot he had pinched yesterday now had a greenish mark with a faint hint of purple. Even though the color wasn’t deep, it was definitely there.
"I didn’t even pinch that hard yesterday. How did that happen?"
She looked at Chen Yuan provocatively. "You bully the kid’s mom like this, and you still say you’re a good dad?"
"You pinched me yesterday, too."
Chen Yuan also lifted his shirt. "It might not have left a mark, but I’ve got internal injuries."
"If I can’t see it, it doesn’t hurt."
"So you’re just going to be unreasonable, huh?"
"Yep. What are you gonna do about it?"
"You just wait. When Mili’s a few years older, I’m going to take her out for barbecue every day. We’ll go eat all the tasty, spicy food."
"Without me?"
"This is between me and my girl. What would we bring you for?"
"You dare!"
Jiang Wanyi’s beautiful eyes shot him a look, and her hand instinctively reached for his waist.
"Are you taking me or not?"
"Yes, yes, yes! We’re both broke. If you don’t come, who’s going to pay for us?"
Jiang Wanyi didn’t let go. Instead, her grip tightened.
"So my only purpose is to pay the bill?"
"No, no, no! You’re a feast for the eyes. If you’re not there, the two of us won’t even be able to eat."
"Hmph. That’s more like it."
Letting go of Chen Yuan, Jiang Wanyi picked up the spatula again.
"There’s some face cream on my vanity—the Lanc?me in the gold bottle. Go put some on. Your skin is all dry from being out in the wind and sun."
"I’m good. It makes my face feel sticky after I use it. It’s uncomfortable."
Jiang Wanyi gave him a ’what-am-I-going-to-do-with-you’ look. ’But on second thought,’ she mused, ’that’s just how men are. If he used that stuff every day, it might seem a little effeminate.’
"Then go wait. It’ll be ready in a second."
"Okay."
Chen Yuan went back to the dining table and scrolled through his phone for a bit. Soon, the stir-fried beef and congee were served.
The steamed bun slices, coated in egg wash, were pan-fried to a golden brown. One bite, and their softness rivaled that of a cake.
He took a bite of the fried egg—it was slightly crispy, just perfect. The beef was tender and flavorful. He really ought to let Comrade Li see what a real breakfast for a human being looked like.
"Eat slowly, don’t choke."
Jiang Wanyi handed him the milk. "Have some milk to wash it down."
"Mhm."
He took a big gulp, let out a burp, and felt utterly satisfied.
"How does it taste?"
"Delicious!"
Tilting her delicate head, Jiang Wanyi huffed, "And you were talking about not taking me with you. If you don’t, who’s going to cook for you? You’d starve until you were nothing but skin and bones!"
"Thank you, Mili’s mom, for saving my sorry hide."
"What ’sorry hide’? Don’t talk like that."
"Alright."
