Chapter 467: Chapter 467: Just Bury Him
Perhaps noticing their presence as uninvited guests, Logan Lockhart frowned and walked over.
"Sis, who are they...?"
"This is Gregory Sherwood from the Sherwood Group. He’s a manager there and also an old college classmate of mine. These two are his friends. The Sherwood Group has recently developed an interest in mobile software development and wanted to tour our company. There’s a chance we might even collaborate in the future."
Jessica Lockhart’s excuse was flawless, and Logan Lockhart accepted it without much hesitation.
"Ah, Mr. Sherwood. We weren’t expecting you. My apologies for the inadequate welcome."
Gregory Sherwood was quite the actor himself. With a faint smile, he extended his hand for a shake. "Your sister and I are old classmates, so today’s visit was rather spur-of-the-moment. Strictly speaking, we’re the ones who are imposing. However, I happened to see your arrangements for the company’s mobile R&D for next quarter, and it seems to be more focused on..."
Right in front of Arabella Donovan and the others, Gregory Sherwood launched into an eloquent discussion with Logan Lockhart. It was hard to tell whether he’d prepared beforehand or was simply drawing from his own vast knowledge.
But it had to be said, Gregory’s presence successfully captured most of Logan Lockhart’s attention. It made Logan completely buy Jessica Lockhart’s story and bought Arabella Donovan the maximum amount of time to observe him.
Watching from the side, Arabella Donovan was rather impressed. She couldn’t help but nudge her sister. "This Mr. Sherwood knows a lot. He seems like the type who can strike up a conversation with anyone about anything."
Eloise Donovan glanced at her. While she agreed with her sister, she still whispered a reminder, "Have you figured anything out yet? Miss Lockhart is still waiting for your answer."
At her sister’s words, Arabella Donovan turned to look at Jessica Lockhart. Sure enough, Jessica was watching her nervously. Arabella gave her a subtle nod, gesturing with her eyes that they should find a more private place to talk.
Jessica Lockhart breathed a sigh of relief and chimed in at the perfect moment. "Logan, since Mr. Sherwood is interested in our company’s software development, why don’t we find somewhere to sit down and discuss it? Let’s not just stand around here."
Jessica’s words served as a reminder to Logan Lockhart. Unsuspecting, he led Arabella Donovan and the others into his office.
The moment the office door shut, Arabella Donovan let out a long breath. She turned to Jessica Lockhart and said gravely, "Miss Lockhart, your brother shows no signs of being under a hex, curse, or any sort of possession."
Everyone in the room froze. Logan Lockhart was the first to snap out of it. "What hex? What possession? Sis, what is she talking about? What are you people doing? Are they really your friends?"
"I... Uh..." Jessica Lockhart hadn’t expected Arabella Donovan to blurt everything out so unguardedly. For a moment, she was at a loss for how to explain.
Seeing her stammer, Logan Lockhart quickly put two and two together. "Is this about her and me? Sis, have you lost your mind? How many times do I have to tell you? Everything I do for her, I do of my own free will. It has nothing to do with her! Why won’t you just listen? I let the other things go, but now... you’re actually bringing in these random outsiders to get involved? I’m so disappointed in you."
The trio of outsiders: "..."
’What a classic speech from a love-struck fool. *I’m doing this of my own free will! I’m the one who wants to shower her with gifts! I’m the one who wants to be her blood bag! I’m the one who wants to be her backup plan and her stepping stone! If you have to blame someone, blame me! Don’t you dare blame my one true Lover, the apple of my eye!* Yikes, that’s laying it on a bit thick.’
"PFFT..." Eloise couldn’t help but snort with laughter.
Well, there was no need to hide the fact that she could hear thoughts anymore. She didn’t bother suppressing her laughter and just let it all out.
Gregory Sherwood, looking completely baffled, asked, "What is it?"
"Oh, nothing. It’s just a novel experience to see a live idiot in the flesh for the first time."
Gregory Sherwood: "???"
Jessica Lockhart, who had been feeling a little guilty, flared up at her brother’s retort. "I disappointed you? You’re the one who’s truly disappointed me! And you have the nerve to blame me? How many times have I told you that woman has ulterior motives? She has no integrity! It’s obvious she’s bad news and certainly not a good match for you, but did you listen? No, it just went in one ear and out the other!"
"If you had just listened to me and cut ties with that woman, would I have gotten so desperate that I’d resort to hiring people to perform an exorcism on you? In my opinion, that woman is a straight-up succubus! She’s sucked the sense right out of you! That’s why you’re defending her, willing to disown your own sister for her sake!"
"Sis!"
"Don’t call me Sis! I don’t have a brother like you!"
The two of them grew more and more heated, looking as if they were about to disown each other at any second.
Arabella Donovan frowned and tentatively interjected, "Um, if you two absolutely have to fight, could you please wait until I’m finished? While Mr. Lockhart doesn’t have any of those... strange things attached to him, it does seem like... he’s already been cheated out of his heart and his money. All that’s left is for his body to be cheated, too."
Jessica Lockhart: "!!!"
Logan Lockhart: "???"
"What nonsense are you spouting?" Logan Lockhart’s expression darkened. His gaze on Arabella Donovan’s group lost its earlier warmth. He clearly saw them as nothing more than common swindlers.
Eloise Donovan, being the über-protective sister she was, couldn’t stand someone yelling at her little sister. She immediately stepped forward, shielding Arabella.
"Guinevere Rhodes. Your girlfriend is Miss Guinevere Rhodes, correct?"
"How do you know that? Do you know Guinevere?"
That one "Guinevere" from him nearly sent the Donovan sisters into a coma. Arabella shuddered, goosebumps crawling up her arms. She instinctively took two steps back, a look of revulsion on her face as if afraid of catching his terminal case of lovesickness.
Eloise was just as disgusted, but she didn’t forget what they were there for.
"So, are you aware she already has a boyfriend?"
"What?!"
The person who cried out wasn’t Logan Lockhart, the man at the center of it all, but his sister, Jessica Lockhart.
"Logan, what on earth is going on? That woman has a boyfriend? Then what does that make you? What is this between you two? Did you know about this? Do you have any idea what you’re doing?"
Compared to Jessica Lockhart’s emotional outburst, Logan Lockhart’s reaction was... interesting.
He wasn’t shocked or angry. Instead, he seemed embarrassed and awkward, like someone whose secret had just been exposed.
Jessica Lockhart knew her brother well enough that one look at his face made her heart sink. She laid down an ultimatum. "You are going to explain this to me, right now. Or else... or else I’m disowning you as my brother!"
"Fine! I’ll talk, alright? I did know about it. But Guinevere said her thing with that guy is just a business arrangement, a marriage of convenience! It’s all fake. They don’t have any feelings for each other and they won’t get married. She doesn’t even like him..."
Everyone present: "..."
’This love-struck fool is a lost cause. Just bury him already!’
