William Quinn turned and left. The doctor stayed behind to give a few brief instructions, telling Nathaniel Monroe to rest well before following suit.
The hospital room fell quiet. Anger and disbelief still swirled in Nathaniel’s eyes. His hands clenched tightly into fists. He closed his eyes and took several deep breaths, struggling to calm the rage brought on by the feeling of betrayal.
He felt something was wrong. He had lost a segment of his memory, so he couldn’t completely believe William’s words, even though he had seen the exchanged emails and evidence. Yet, Nathaniel still couldn’t suppress his anger!
He wondered why Walker had hidden it from them. Iris Yates had been taken away for so long, and he had known all along. Yet, for Chloe Reed’s sake, he didn’t care about Iris’s feelings at all!
Walker Grant...
Nathaniel chewed on the name repeatedly, as if doing so was the only way to temper his blazing fury.
Outside the ward.
The doctor looked at William with extreme reverence. "Sir, the drug worked. He has indeed forgotten everything that happened around the time he went abroad."
William nodded, generously offering his praise. "You did very well."
Excitement filled the doctor’s eyes. "Thank you for supporting my research, sir. If it weren’t for you, my work would never have reached this stage."
"What phase are you at now?" William asked.
At the mention of this, the doctor’s expression grew even more animated. "I am already researching memory replacement—taking one person’s memories and implanting them into another’s brain. Wouldn’t that essentially be swapping lives? If this research succeeds, it will be an absolute miracle!"
Hearing the doctor’s words, William’s blue eyes brightened slightly. "Could you make someone who originally doesn’t love you fall deeply in love with you?"
The doctor paused for a moment before replying, "Sir, you’ve given me a new direction! I’ll go research this immediately!"
William chuckled. "Go on. Tell me as soon as you have results."
"Understood!"
Leaving the clinic, William returned to the castle. He pushed open the heavy, intricately carved doors to find Iris’s slender body lying on the soft, massive bed. Her eyes were closed. She looked like a delicate flower, tempting anyone to lean in, breathe in her fragrance, and then pluck her for themselves.
He leaned close, meticulously kissing her brows and eyes.
His actions startled her awake. Iris opened her eyes, and upon seeing him, her body flinched. The fear in her eyes was impossible to conceal.
William felt displeased, but his tone remained exceptionally gentle. "Baby, what’s wrong? Did you have a nightmare?"
Iris closed her eyes to calm her emotions. The greatest nightmare of her life right now was meeting him. Opening her eyes again, she looked at him and asked, "Has he left?"
William shook his head. "Not yet."
Iris furrowed her brows. "Didn’t you promise me you would let him go?"
William kissed her as he spoke, his tone incredibly soft and lingering. "I have people treating his wounds. Once he recovers, I’ll send him away. If I let him leave in that state, he would undoubtedly die at sea. You would definitely be heartbroken then, and I don’t want to see you sad."
Iris looked at him suspiciously. She wondered if he could really be that kindhearted.
Unhappy with the way she was looking at him, William immediately said, "Baby, do you not believe me? I can take you to see him, then."
