Greyrock's gates stood open, but no caravans waited outside them.
Subin noticed the difference before the team reached the entrance. The road leading from Stonehaven was normally used by ore merchants, stonecutters, and traveling traders, yet the only wagons near the town were empty ones parked beside the roadside. A pair of guards watched the surrounding hills while another inspected the wheels of a damaged cart.
Inside, the market square had fallen quiet. Several stalls remained closed, and merchants had gathered around a notice board covered with announcements about delayed shipments. The town was not deserted, but its people were running short of supplies.
A woman wearing a dark green cloak approached the expedition.
"Are you the Awakeners who helped Stonehaven?"
Subin nodded. "What do you need?"
"My name is Mira. I manage Greyrock's trade registry. We've received no reliable shipment from the northern mines for twelve days, and our last two caravans never arrived. Stonehaven told us you were heading this way."
"Did the caravans disappear on the road?"
"One never reached the town. The other was found near the old quarry road, with its cargo scattered and its guards missing. We sent a recovery team, but they returned after finding something large moving among the abandoned carts."
Ara glanced at the notice board. "What were the caravans carrying?"
"Mostly iron ore, tools, and mana crystals. Nothing unusual for this route."
"Any survivors?"
"One merchant guard made it back. He's recovering at the infirmary."
Subin agreed to speak with the guard before deciding what to do. Mira led them through a narrow street to a small building near the southern wall, where the injured man lay on a bed with his left arm bandaged.
His name was Doran. He described the attack in short, strained sentences. His caravan had been traveling through a rocky ravine when the ground beneath the rear wagon collapsed. Several creatures emerged from the broken earth, attacked the guards, and dragged away the cargo. Doran had escaped by jumping down a side slope, but he had seen the creatures return to the ravine with pieces of the wagon.
"Did they eat the cargo animals?" Yerin asked.
"No. They ignored the horses after killing them. They took the metal and the crystals."
"That sounds deliberate," Jae-hyun said.
"Or the creatures were attracted to the mana crystals," Ara replied. "We shouldn't assume they understand the value of the cargo."
Subin asked Doran to mark the attack site on a local map. The ravine lay west of Greyrock, where an old mining road passed between two steep ridges. It was a shorter route than the main trade road, but recent rockfalls had made it difficult for large wagons to use.
Mira offered a guide, but Subin declined. The map was sufficient for reaching the ravine, and the town needed its guards to protect the remaining supplies.
"We'll investigate the attack site and return with a report," he said. "Until then, don't send another caravan through the ravine."
They left Greyrock before midday.
The damaged road was easy to follow. Broken axles and scattered cargo marked the route, and several sections of the hillside showed signs of recent disturbance. Near a bend in the ravine, they found the remains of the missing caravan.
Two wagons had been overturned, their iron fittings ripped away. The cargo crates lay open, and the ground was covered in deep furrows. There were signs of a struggle, but no bodies remained.
Rafael examined the ground beside a wheel. "Something dragged the guards toward the lower ravine."
Subin followed the marks to a narrow opening beneath a rock shelf. The entrance was wide enough for a person to crawl through, but the earth around it had been freshly disturbed. From inside came the faint sound of stone scraping against stone.
Ara checked her scanner. "Multiple mana signatures. At least five creatures, possibly more."
"Any indication of the missing guards?" Yerin asked.
"Not from here."
Subin drew Simple Edge. "We'll check the entrance. If the tunnel becomes unstable, we withdraw."
The passage widened after several meters into a natural cavern. Broken ore crates lay near the walls, and the creatures had piled metal fittings and mana crystals in a shallow depression. Several small, dark-scaled beasts were feeding on the mineral deposits, grinding them between powerful jaws.
Their bodies were compact and heavily muscled, with thick heads and short limbs adapted for digging. Unlike the Crawlers at Stonehaven, these creatures had no broad stone armor. Their scales were dark brown, and pale mineral ridges ran along their spines.
Ara's scanner identified them as Level 228–235 A-rank: Ironmaw Diggers.
One raised its head and snarled.
The creatures attacked almost together, rushing across the cavern floor. Subin cut down the first as it lunged, then turned his blade against the second before it could reach Ara. Yerin's spear pierced another through the shoulder, forcing it away from the pile of crystals.
Liu Wei and Jae-hyun dealt with the remaining two. The short fight ended with three dead creatures and two retreating through a crack at the rear of the cavern.
Subin did not pursue them. He checked the chamber for signs of the missing guards.
They found three bodies beneath a collapsed section of the tunnel. The men had been killed during the initial attack, and the collapse had buried them before the creatures could drag them deeper. There was no sign of the remaining caravan members.
Rafael covered the dead with spare cloth while Yerin checked the narrow crack where the two surviving creatures had escaped.
"It leads deeper," she said. "The opening is too narrow for us to enter without widening it."
Ara examined the scattered metal. The creatures had collected iron fittings, ore fragments, and mana crystals, but they had not arranged them in any recognizable pattern. Several pieces had been chewed or crushed, leaving them nearly useless.
"They may be consuming the minerals," she said. "The mana crystals could provide energy, while the metal helps maintain their bodies or burrowing structures. I can't confirm the exact process from these remains."
"Then we know why they attacked the wagons," Subin said. "But we still don't know where the other guards went."
He examined the cavern's floor. The creatures had dragged several objects toward the rear passage, including a broken shield and a length of chain. The marks continued beyond the narrow crack, suggesting that at least part of the colony extended farther into the hillside.
The team withdrew to the surface and followed the ravine toward the northern slope. A second opening appeared near the base of a rocky outcrop, partially concealed by fallen brush. Unlike the first entrance, this one was wide enough to admit a wagon.
Fresh tracks surrounded it.
The missing caravan's trail led inside.
Subin entered first, with the others close behind. The tunnel descended into a larger chamber where the air smelled of damp stone and crushed minerals. Several Ironmaw Diggers moved between piles of ore, carrying chunks of metal toward a deeper recess.
Beyond them, a human voice called for help.
"Over here!"
They found four survivors behind a collapsed cart. Two were caravan guards, and the other two were laborers who had been traveling with the shipment. One guard had a broken leg, while the second had suffered a deep wound across his back. They had survived by blocking the creatures from reaching the small chamber, using the cart and a broken section of stonework as a barrier.
Rafael immediately treated the injured men. Subin asked the survivors whether they had seen the creatures' larger members.
"There's something deeper," one guard said. "The small ones keep bringing it metal. We heard it moving, and the whole chamber shook."
"Did it attack you?"
"No. But when the small ones returned, they stopped making noise. They seemed afraid of it."
A heavy impact sounded beyond the recess.
Dust drifted from the ceiling.
Subin looked toward the deeper chamber. "Get the survivors to the entrance. We need to know what's in there before it comes looking for them."
Jae-hyun and Liu Wei escorted the rescued workers toward the surface while Rafael remained with them. Yerin joined Subin at the recess, where the tunnel widened into a vast underground chamber.
The larger creature stood amid a mound of mineral fragments.
It was almost eleven meters long, with a thick, low-slung body and a broad skull reinforced by layers of dark metallic growth. Its forelimbs ended in curved digging claws, while its back carried jagged ridges that scraped the ceiling when it moved. A pale glow shone through several cracks in its armored hide.
Ara's scanner, which she had carried forward, registered Level 274 A-rank: Ironmaw Sovereign.
The creature lifted its head. Its eyes fixed on Subin, and a low growl rolled through the chamber.
Unlike the smaller Diggers, the Sovereign did not immediately charge. It stood between the team and the mineral mound, scraping one claw across the ground.
Subin noticed that the smaller creatures had gathered around the chamber's edges. They were not attacking, but none dared approach the Sovereign while it watched the intruders.
"It controls the colony," Ara said quietly. "The smaller ones may be collecting minerals for it."
The Sovereign struck the ground.
A wave of force shattered the nearest rock formation, sending fragments across the chamber. Subin pulled Yerin clear of the debris, then moved before the creature could strike again.
His first cut landed along the side of its neck, where the armor plates overlapped. The blade penetrated, but not deeply enough to stop it. The Sovereign swung its head, forcing Subin away, and drove its claws into the ground. A section of the floor collapsed beneath his previous position.
Yerin attacked the exposed wound, her spear forcing the creature to turn toward her. Subin used that moment to cut across its forelimb joint. The Sovereign roared and slammed its body against the cavern wall, cracking the stone.
The impact triggered a cascade of falling debris.
"Move away from the wall!" Ara shouted.
Subin realized the creature was not merely strong; its weight and digging power made the chamber itself a weapon. If the fight continued unchecked, the ceiling could bury everyone inside.
He focused on the creature's movement. Its strongest attacks began with a shift of weight onto the front limbs, followed by a short, explosive lunge. The damaged forelimb had shortened its reach, but it had also made the Sovereign more aggressive, causing it to commit its full weight to each charge.
Subin waited until the creature lunged.
He stepped past the sweeping claws and drove Simple Edge into the wounded joint beneath its neck. The blade cut through the damaged tissue and struck the hard structure beneath. The Sovereign's charge faltered, and its head dropped heavily against the floor.
Yerin's spear pinned the injured forelimb long enough for Subin to withdraw his sword and reposition. He delivered a final cut across the vulnerable underside of the neck.
The Sovereign collapsed beside the mineral mound.
Its death brought an abrupt change to the chamber. The smaller Diggers scattered into the surrounding tunnels, abandoning the collected ore and crystals. Several fled past the team toward the outer ravine, but Subin did not attempt to chase them. The immediate threat had ended, and the survivors still needed help.
He examined the Sovereign's body. The pale glow beneath its armor had faded, leaving a dense mana core embedded near the chest. Ara carefully recorded its location and collected a sample of the mineral deposits for later examination.
"The colony won't disappear just because the Sovereign is dead," she warned. "The smaller ones can survive independently. Some may return once the area is quiet."
"Then we close the accessible entrances and mark the others," Subin said. "Greyrock can decide whether it has the people and resources to clear the entire network."
They returned to the entrance with the survivors. The injured men were carried back to Greyrock, where Mira had arranged medical treatment and a temporary shelter. When she learned that three caravan guards had died and that four others had been rescued, she lowered her head in grief before thanking the team.
Subin gave her a full account of the cavern and the remaining tunnels. He explained that the Ironmaw Sovereign had been killed, but smaller creatures had escaped through several openings in the hillside.
"Can we send miners back to the ravine?" Mira asked.
"Not yet. The tunnels need to be surveyed and the unstable sections secured. You can recover cargo from the surface, but don't enter the underground chambers."
Mira agreed to close the ravine road and arrange for a new survey team. She also promised to contact the families of the dead guards and ensure that the rescued workers received their agreed compensation.
That evening, Ara examined the material taken from the cavern. The Ironmaw creatures appeared to concentrate mana-rich minerals around their nesting sites, but she found no evidence that the ore itself was being transformed into something extraordinary. Their behavior was dangerous, yet consistent with a species adapted to underground mineral deposits.
The discovery had a practical consequence for Greyrock: the old ravine route would remain closed until the colony's tunnels were mapped and the remaining creatures dealt with. Merchants would have to use the longer road through Stonehaven, raising transport costs and delaying the delivery of ore.
Mira began contacting the affected traders before the expedition departed.
The next morning, she met Subin at the town gate with a packet of letters addressed to Stonehaven and several nearby settlements. She asked him to carry a warning about the Ironmaw colony and the need to inspect other abandoned mining routes.
Subin accepted the packet.
"We'll deliver the warning where we can," he said. "But your guards should send copies along the southern road as well. Don't rely on one expedition to reach every settlement."
Mira nodded. "I'll arrange it."
As the team left Greyrock, Yerin glanced back at the market square. Merchants had begun reopening their stalls, though the missing shipments would take time to replace.
"Another settlement saved, but another road closed," she said.
"That's what happens when people build their livelihoods around routes they haven't fully secured," Subin replied. "The answer isn't to stop using them. It's to understand the risks and prepare for them."
Jae-hyun adjusted his pack. "You make everything sound like a lesson."
"Would you prefer I say we killed a giant monster and found some expensive crystals?"
"Honestly? Sometimes."
Yerin laughed, and even Liu Wei smiled.
The western road continued toward the highlands, where Greyrock's traders had reported another delay. This time, the problem was not a missing caravan but a fortified settlement that had stopped sending patrols altogether.
Subin checked the route on the map and folded it away.
The expedition continued north, carrying the warning from Greyrock and the recovered mana core. Behind them, the ravine was closed, the survivors were safe, and the remaining Ironmaw Diggers had retreated into the earth.
Their next destination was Northwatch, a border settlement whose silence had lasted longer than anyone in Greyrock could explain.
