Amie lay on the bed, thrashing beneath her blanket as sweat glistened on her forehead and soaked into the pillow.
"Leave me!"
She struggled against the people in her dream.
With no one by her side to wake her, she remained that way until she finally opened her eyes.
She jerked upright, her eyes taking in her surroundings. When she noticed that she was still in her bedroom at the Vassari mansion, she let out a breath of relief.
She had dreamed that she was being dragged out of the mansion while a voice hovered over her, telling her she didn’t deserve any of it.
Amie didn’t know what had caused the dream, but she quickly ruled it as unimportant.
It was hard for her to believe what had actually happened the previous night.
It was supposed to be the night she finally gained access to cards worth billions and was named the successor to a multibillion-dollar empire, but all thanks to June, she had lost it.
In annoyance, Amie grabbed the lamp closest to her and smashed it on the floor.
The sound echoed through the room.
But because most of the rooms in the mansion were soundproof, no one heard her.
She tried to calm herself.
There was still a way out.
After all, Serena was still blind, and she still thought Amie was her daughter.
She only needed to cozy up to Serena.
From the way Serena acted, she wouldn’t watch her only daughter go hungry or suffer.
With that thought in mind, Amie stepped down from the bed, temporarily forgetting about the lamp she had thrown.
Instantly, one of the pieces of glass on the floor cut her foot.
A few drops of blood came out of the wound, and Amie let out a scream that echoed through the room.
But again, no one could hear her because the room was soundproof.
She rolled back onto the bed, hitting it repeatedly as she waited for the pain to reduce.
She learned her lesson and decided to use the other side of the bed, carefully checking to make sure there were no more fragments of glass on the floor.
She got ready and dressed up, mentally reminding herself to tell the maids to clean up her room.
On her way to the breakfast table, she heard voices coming from the dining room.
Serena and Chris were discussing the previous night’s attack, but as soon as they heard Amie’s footsteps, Chris raised a finger to signal to Serena that someone was coming.
Immediately, Serena changed the topic.
"I think the mansion will be needing more guards. It’s a thing of shame that my daughter was attacked in my mansion on her day."
Chris nodded. "And I think that Gerald guy isn’t doing his job properly. Isn’t he supposed to be guarding Amie? Where was he when the incident happened?"
Hearing that, Amie hurried towards Chris.
"No, brother." She held onto his wrist. "Gerald was busy on my account. I sent him somewhere."
There was no way she was letting them send her only man in the mansion away.
Even if June wasn’t in the mansion anymore, Gerald could still bring her information he heard from the other guards.
Chris sighed. "This Gerald guy is always absent whenever you’re attacked. Are you sure he isn’t working with the enemy?"
Amie was silent for a moment. She didn’t want to sound too eager to defend Gerald, but soon, she shook her head.
"I trust Gerald with my life, brother. He would do no such thing."
Chris nodded. "Fine. If you trust him that much, I guess I can trust him too."
Glad that Gerald was staying, she took her seat at the table, wincing as she moved towards it.
"What’s wrong with your leg?" Chris asked after observing her. "Was it from last night?"
Immediately, Amie shook her head.
"It’s nothing."
She didn’t want them knowing she had been breaking things in annoyance.
They needed to believe she was the good girl so they could spoil her rotten.
"How do you feel?" Serena asked with fake concern. "I’m searching for the men who caused that chaos at your party, and I promise to bring them to book."
Amie nodded.
Regardless of everything, she had Chris and Serena’s trust, and that was all that mattered.
After taking a few spoonfuls of food, she batted her lashes at Chris.
"Brother, I feel so disoriented. I need something to cheer me up."
Chris paused, watching her carefully.
Her face was twisted with sadness, and there were streaks of tears in her eyes. If he hadn’t known the type of person she was, he might have fallen for her trap.
"I’m sorry, my dear. What do you need?"
Amie smirked inwardly.
Pretending to be the good girl was easy. It was a role she had played all her life.
"I just want a card. I think a complete change of my wardrobe will restore my mood. It’s gloomy staring at the same batch of dresses and jewelry."
Chris tightened his hand beside him.
The last card he had given her, she had squandered the funds in it.
He sighed.
"I’m sorry, Amie, but things aren’t really easy for me these days. Most of my funds are tied up in an investment, and I’m yet to see any returns. It’s the reason I’ve been so busy."
Amie’s eyes widened in disbelief, but she quickly schooled her expression.
"I’m so sorry about that, brother. I hope you recover your funds soon."
Chris nodded.
Then she turned to Serena, who had been watching her from behind her dark glasses.
"Mother, what about you?"
"Darling, you know I haven’t been doing much lately because of my condition. Chris is in charge of the accounting, and he already told me that most of our available money is tied up in investments."
Then she pretended to search for Amie’s hand. 𝘧𝓇ℯℴ𝓂
Amie immediately placed her hand in Serena’s.
"I’ll find you something once things are settled."
Amie stared at them.
It was hard to believe they had no money.
"What about my funds? The ones you promised last night?"
Serena sighed.
"Amie, darling, I already told you the condition for accessing those funds."
Amie could feel her ears growing hot with anger.
This was all June’s fault.
If she hadn’t charmed Rauf, Amie would have all the funds she wanted by now.
