The Emperor was midway through a council briefing when the messenger arrived, breathless and pale, interrupting the session without waiting for formal acknowledgment.
"Your Majesty," she gasped, "forgive the intrusion, but— Guide Valerian. he’s collapsed again."
The room fell silent, every council member turning toward the doorway, and the Emperor felt something cold and immediate crash through his chest, all thought of the briefing’s careful diplomatic language evaporating instantly.
"where," he said, voice sharp and urgent, already rising from his seat.
"the Elite Academy was attacked," the messenger said quickly. "a coordinated horde, apparently directed similar to the assault on the capital. Guide Valerian fought there, according to reports— manifested something beyond his previous abilities, something the healers are calling a legendary rank. he collapsed from exhaustion afterward. Commander Calloway has already brought him back to the main academy’s medical wing."
The Emperor’s mind raced, dread and fresh, raw fear crashing through him in equal measure. "his condition," he said. "is it—"
"stable, according to the initial report," the messenger said quickly, seeing the alarm plain across his face. "not the same as the coma. the healers believe it’s severe exhaustion, nothing more. but Your Majesty, given everything that’s already happened—"
"I understand," the Emperor said, already moving toward the door, the council session forgotten entirely behind him. "thank you. you’re dismissed."
Several council members rose in protest, voices overlapping with concern and confusion both. "Your Majesty, we were in the middle of—"
"this council will reconvene tomorrow," the Emperor said, not slowing his stride, voice carrying absolute, unquestionable authority despite the raw fear threading beneath it. "I trust you can all manage without me for the remainder of today."
He left before anyone could properly argue further, moving fast through the palace corridors, guilt and dread both tangling hard and inescapable in his chest as memory crashed back unbidden — the six long weeks of Julian’s unconscious silence, the desperate, unanswered visits, every single missed opportunity these past days to simply be present the way he’d promised himself he would.
’not again,’ he thought, urgency driving his pace faster despite the careful composure he tried to maintain in front of the palace staff still watching him pass. ’please, not again.’
The journey to the academy felt endless, every minute stretching taut with fresh, unbearable worry, and by the time he finally reached the medical wing, breathless and disheveled from the fast, undignified pace he’d maintained the entire distance, he found Reid already waiting near the entrance, exhaustion carved deep into his own scarred features.
"how is he," the Emperor demanded, not bothering with formal greeting.
"stable," Reid said, something tired but genuinely reassuring in his voice. "the healers confirmed it’s exhaustion, not the same catastrophic collapse as before. he should wake within a day or two."
Some of the crushing weight in the Emperor’s chest eased slightly, though the guilt remained sharp and unresolved. "what happened," he asked. "the messenger mentioned some kind of legendary rank."
Reid’s expression shifted, something complicated and heavy settling behind his tired eyes. "he did something I still don’t fully understand," he admitted. "manifested an entirely new level of power, powerful enough to clear an entire horde in minutes, reverse corruption on Sentinels who’d already turned." He paused, something grimmer entering his voice now. "and he brought back Xavier and Ian. the two brothers who held him captive. whatever the entity did to them, turning them into hollow, mindless weapons — Julian severed that control. twice, back to back. that’s what cost him so much."
The Emperor absorbed that slowly, disbelief and fresh, complicated emotion crashing through him at once. "he saved them," he said. "after everything they did to him."
"apparently," Reid said. "I don’t fully understand his reasoning either, if I’m honest. but that’s what happened."
The Emperor let out a long, unsteady breath, turning the information over with careful, methodical focus despite the exhaustion and worry still pulling hard at his own composure. "may I see him," he asked finally, quieter now, something vulnerable bleeding through the request.
Reid studied him a moment, something understanding settling behind his exhausted expression. "of course," he said. "he’s resting in the same room as before."
The Emperor made his way through the medical wing’s still-busy corridors, past healers and Guides working steady among the wounded, until he finally reached the familiar room where Julian lay still and pale against the pillows, breathing slow and even, exhaustion carved deep into every line of his sleeping features.
He settled into the chair beside the bed slowly, the same chair he’d occupied for six long weeks months ago, and reached out carefully to take Julian’s hand in both of his own.
"I promised myself I’d make time for you," he said quietly, voice rough with guilt and exhaustion both. "and instead, days passed, and I let duty consume every hour I should have spent proving that promise meant something. and now you’re here again, unconscious, because you spent everything you had saving people who very nearly destroyed you."
Julian’s breathing continued its slow, steady rhythm, no response at all beyond the simple, reassuring evidence that he was, at least, still breathing.
"I don’t know if you can hear me," the Emperor continued, voice softening further. "last time, you told me you heard everything. every word, spoken into what I thought was silence. I don’t know if that’s true this time too. but I need to say it regardless, because I refuse to let another stretch of unconsciousness pass without you knowing exactly how much I regret the distance I let grow between us these past days."
He tightened his grip gently around Julian’s still hand, exhaustion and raw, unguarded honesty both threading through every word now.
"you gave two men who tormented you a second chance today," he said. "even after everything. that’s not something I fully understand, but it tells me something about you I already knew and somehow keep needing reminded of — you’re stronger and more generous than anyone I’ve ever known, and I keep failing to show you I properly recognize that."
The room settled into quiet around him, the medical wing’s distant, ongoing activity a faint hum beyond the door, and the Emperor remained there a long while, holding Julian’s hand, turning over everything he wanted to say properly once Julian woke, everything he’d let slip through careless, guilty silence these past days.
"whenever you wake this time," he said finally, voice quiet but resolute, "I promise you’ll find me here. not just today. properly, from now on. you’ve spent this entire ordeal giving everyone else second chances they probably don’t deserve. I’d like the opportunity to actually earn mine, instead of simply hoping you’ll extend it out of habit."
Julian didn’t stir, breathing slow and steady, exhaustion holding him fast beneath rest his body clearly, desperately needed.
The Emperor settled back in his chair, resolve hardening steady behind his exhausted eyes, and prepared himself, this time, to actually keep the vigil properly — present, attentive, and unwilling to let duty pull him away again, whatever else demanded his attention in the days ahead.
