Chapter 463: Chapter 463: Go Apologize
Meanwhile, Nathaniel Sloan waited for Estelle Lockwood to finish her call. He chuckled, raising an eyebrow. "Can Star really not survive half a day without you?"
Estelle blinked. "I’m just finding something to keep myself occupied." She checked the time, her tone meaningful. "After all, we should technically be at Radiance right now, holding the handover ceremony."
Nathaniel’s voice was slightly hoarse. "I’m sorry. I didn’t arrange things properly."
"Not exactly." Estelle shook her head. As the chairwoman of her own company, she knew perfectly well that someone in his position couldn’t possibly micromanage every single employee. That Ms. Sawyer’s role at Radiance wasn’t significant enough to warrant a meeting with Nathaniel. Naturally, he wouldn’t even know who she was, much less anticipate how incredibly stupid she could be.
Resting her chin in her hand, she asked, "I’m just curious. Why is Claire Yeats so firmly convinced that you’re going to gift the company to her?"
Nathaniel raised an eyebrow.
"That Ms. Sawyer..." Estelle mused. "One look and you can tell she’s a fool. She’s probably incompetent and deeply jealous. Since she didn’t have the ability to earn a promotion while you were at Radiance, she decided her best bet was to suck up to the new boss.
"But how did Claire manage to convince Ms. Sawyer so thoroughly?
"Or rather, why is Claire acting so certain? Isn’t she afraid of being exposed?" Estelle looked at him with a beaming smile. "Claire claimed that Radiance was a gift from her best friend."
Nathaniel looked a bit helpless. He raised his hands in a mock surrender, his demeanor filled with pampering affection. "I didn’t do it."
Estelle arched an eyebrow. "Then I suppose Mr. Sloan will just have to interrogate Miss Yeats personally."
Nathaniel chuckled and nodded.
"Also, Mr. Sloan, I’ve changed my mind," Estelle said, tucking a stray strand of hair behind her ear. "I don’t want to keep a low profile anymore."
Previously, she had insisted on keeping a low profile because she hadn’t wanted her identity as the new owner of Radiance to be exposed.
Understanding her intentions, Nathaniel replied in a gentle voice, "Alright. I’ll take care of it."
Meanwhile, at Radiance.
Claire was starting to get anxious.
Ms. Sawyer was equally panicked. If Claire didn’t end up taking over as the owner of Radiance, all her desperate flattery would have been for nothing. ℯℯ𝘭.
"What?" President Kerr abruptly stood up while on a phone call. "She was here? And she was kicked out?" He cast a meaningful glance at President Sawyer. "I see."
President Sawyer knew he was being put in his place. He glared viciously at his niece, took a deep breath, and demanded, "What on earth is going on with the front desk? Why would they kick the boss out when she showed up at the door?"
President Kerr sneered, amused that the man was still trying to shift the blame to the receptionists.
"President Sawyer, the higher-ups have specifically requested that your niece go and apologize in person," Faye Foster said with a polite smile. She had disliked President Sawyer for a long time. "After all, she was the one who drove her away. There’s really no need for you to blame the front desk, is there?"
Gritting his teeth, President Sawyer turned to Vera Sawyer. "Do you think this company is your own house? Kicking someone out without even knowing who they are! What, are you trying to go rogue?"
Vera was genuinely panicking now. Who had she kicked out? She had clearly been busy giving Miss Claire a proper reception!
"I... I was by Miss Yeats’s side this whole time! I didn’t see anyone else!" she stammered.
President Kerr remarked casually, "President Sawyer, your niece’s brain really doesn’t seem to work very well."
President Sawyer seethed. "If something goes wrong, do you think you can bear the consequences? Do you have any idea what kind of person the owner of Radiance is? You didn’t even know, yet you dared to offend her!"
Vera looked around in a complete panic, still utterly confused.
She frantically racked her brain. Who had she kicked out just now? Aside from Estelle, there had been no one else. Besides, Miss Yeats was already here, and Miss Yeats was the main character today. Who could possibly be more important than her?
Could it have been another executive? That made sense. Perhaps the boss had sent someone else over. But they couldn’t just disregard the big picture like this! So what if she hadn’t been paying attention and accidentally slighted them? To throw a tantrum and refuse to attend the meeting over it was simply despicable!
President Sawyer issued a cold order. "If you don’t want your termination to be completely humiliating, get yourself over to Evernight International and apologize."
Evernight International... Why Evernight International?
"We have no choice," President Kerr smiled. "A very important VIP is refusing to attend today, which means the entire ceremony cannot proceed. And you are the one who offended her... Oh, right. There’s one thing you might not know, Ms. Sawyer. The true owner of Radiance is actually Mr. Sloan of Evernight International. Now then, off you go to apologize."
Vera was shoved out the door. She stood there, completely frozen in shock.
It was Nathaniel Sloan?! Then Estelle... When Estelle came over just now, could she have been...
Claire approached her, her tone full of apology. "Vivian, I’m so sorry. I didn’t tell you the truth earlier. The owner of Radiance is indeed Nathaniel. I’ve known this for a long time, and Estelle probably knew it too...
"Nathaniel is probably giving you a hard time because of me. It’s all my fault, but I can’t leave right now... I’ll give him a call. I know Estelle was being utterly ridiculous. Don’t worry. Once I officially take over, I’ll definitely compensate you.
"Nathaniel might have misunderstood you, but that’s alright. He’s a very good man. Just go and explain things clearly to him, and he won’t make things difficult for you."
Vera snapped out of her daze, suddenly feeling as if everything made sense. She understood now. Estelle had come solely to pick a fight! Mr. Sloan had never publicly revealed his identity, so no one knew he was the owner of Radiance. But Estelle knew.
Estelle must have heard that Mr. Sloan was gifting Radiance to Miss Yeats. Humiliated and furious, she had shown up to cause trouble before running back to tattle on her. Thus, Mr. Sloan had been led to believe that Vera looked down on Estelle. Now, Estelle was throwing a tantrum, refusing to let Mr. Sloan come to the ceremony unless Vera personally apologized.
Vera decided that this was her perfect opportunity to show her loyalty. The wheels in her head began to turn. "Don’t worry, Miss Yeats. I’ll go to Evernight International right now. I’ll make sure Mr. Sloan finds out exactly how shameless Estelle Lockwood really is!"
Vera took a taxi straight to Evernight International.
When they heard she was there to see Mr. Sloan, the receptionists downstairs gave her extremely odd looks. Still, after making a quick inquiry, they let her go upstairs.
The elevator arrived at Nathaniel’s exclusive floor.
With a mixture of apprehension and excitement, Vera slowly pushed the door open. She was about to meet Mr. Sloan. Knowing the relationship between him and Miss Yeats, she was absolutely certain he wouldn’t make things difficult for her. She might even be able to score some points with a VIP like him—
"Why is it you?!"
The moment the door opened, Vera’s expression drastically changed. Utter disbelief washed over her face, rapidly replaced by pure fury. "This is Mr. Sloan’s office! What gives you the right to sit in his chair? Who do you think you are?!"
Estelle recalled President Kerr’s evaluation of this woman. It could be summarized in a single word: stupid. Looking at her now, it was clear President Kerr was a superb judge of character.
Estelle swiveled the chair slightly, raising an eyebrow with amused interest. "Is Ms. Sawyer really that surprised to see me? You shouldn’t be... This is Nathaniel’s office. Is it so strange that I’m here?"
Vera scoffed. She thought to herself that the woman was nothing more than a clingy parasite who only knew how to throw tantrums at her husband’s workplace.
Her voice dripped with disdain. "I’m just surprised at how completely shameless you are!"
