The door to Chris’s office opened slightly. Nate walked in, closing the door behind him.
Apart from Chris, he was the only other person who had access to the office.
Chris lifted his eyes from the laptop.
Apart from the attack, everything else had been going well with the business.
In fact, he was doing surprisingly well, considering the fact that he was barely at the headquarters to give the guys instructions, yet they were carrying out each activity without a hitch.
It made him oddly feel proud of the grown men.
"What did you find out?"
Nate pulled out a crisp sheet of paper from a folder in his bag. "This was all I was able to find out."
The paper contained a full image of the logo, along with a few notes written in a hurry.
"The logo belongs to a secret private organization. They work with different groups to help disseminate information."
Chris stared at the logo, his hand tracing it lightly. "What does this have to do with June?"
Nate’s expressionless face remained unchanged.
"They sometimes work as mercenaries. It could be that someone hired them to attack the young miss. And sometimes, they carry out operations that would benefit them. No one can tell where their loyalty lies."
His explanation didn’t give Chris any sort of ease. Instead, it only made him more bothered.
How could some private organization know about June and where she would be?
Chris thought about it for a while.
If there was anyone he knew who would want to harm June, it was Samir. But then, what about Amie?
"Did you also find out about Amie’s attack?"
After leaving Serena’s room, he had given Nate the details he knew and asked him to research.
Nate nodded. "Miss Amie was also attacked, but it was hard to tell if it was an accident or planned. It was more or less like she was in a battle with the attacker. The only detail I could find about the attacker was that he seemed to be in dire need of money."
He stopped, then started again all of a sudden. "It could be that he asked the young miss for money or something."
Chris didn’t interrupt once as he explained carefully.
The way Serena had said it was different. It was as if Amie had been standing on her own and was suddenly attacked by the man.
"And Gerald?"
"He didn’t leave the mansion with Miss Amie."
"Why? Wasn’t he supposed to escort her everywhere?"
"According to some of the staff, Miss Amie had insisted that he wait behind."
For what reason? Chris thought. But that was the least of his worries.
Even with Nate’s research, they were back at square one.
"No problem, Nate. But I want you to double your effort in keeping June safe. She’s the priority. Everything else is secondary."
"Of course, sir."
He left the office.
Meanwhile, Rauf finally met a realtor who claimed to have a building close to the Vassari’s mansion.
He stood in front of an old building that looked like it would fall down at any moment.
When the realtor took him to the place, it was a street away from the mansion.
Rauf wondered how such a house was still in the vicinity.
It was spoiling the beauty of the other buildings in the area.
"It’s within walking distance, sir. In no time, you’re already within range of the mansion. And the property just needs a few repairs, and you’re good to go, sir."
The more the man spoke, the more Rauf’s gaze narrowed at him.
"Was he joking?" he asked.
Henson chuckled beside him.
He had told Rauf that considering the fact that the realtor had claimed to have a mansion close to the Vassaris’ as soon as they asked, it was probably false.
But out of desperation, Rauf had insisted on seeing it.
"You call that close?" Rauf hissed, getting ready to leave the realtor by the roadside. "And you call that a manageable building?"
Although the state of the building was the last thing on Rauf’s mind. If he wanted the house, putting up a new structure there would only be a piece of cake.
The man sighed. "Let me tell you the truth. Every house close to the Vassaris’ belongs to someone already."
But Rauf wasn’t listening to him anymore.
"This was my fault for trying to do it this way."
Henson nodded. "I’ll return to the hotel."
He got into the car, leaving the realtor on the roadside, gaping at him.
If it were some other time, he would have thought the man didn’t know who he was dealing with. But with the idea brewing in his head, he could hardly spare the man a glance.
"Wipe that smug look off your face," he told Henson.
But all Henson did was smile wider.
It was nice to see Rauf doing something different apart from pining over June in a hotel room.
Even if the action would still only lead him to be closer to June.
It was still an oddly satisfying mood.
"Any information on the masked man?"
Henson shook his head, wiping off the smile on his face. "I was able to check through the gaming center CCTV, but not once did the man open his mask. It felt like he was following them. He came in after them and left a few minutes after they did. But there was a little confrontation with Mr. Vassari."
And Chris didn’t mention a thing about it.
Rauf shrugged. "If it was something little, he was certain Chris would be able to handle it."
Before Henson could pull into the parking lot of the hotel, Rauf said, "I want every information I can get on those who own houses close to the Vassaris’. And check if any of them is in desperate need of money or is in debt."
"Yes, sir." Henson bowed.
Rauf nodded. "If you find anyone, you can come up with a suitable plan to acquire the house."
Henson nodded.
This was the route he had expected his boss to take from the first moment he had mentioned getting a house close to the Vassaris. He had no idea why he had gone through a realtor.
But he was more surprised that Rauf didn’t bother punishing the realtor who had wasted the majority of his time.
Meanwhile, Gerald was cooped up in the small room he had been given to share with two other guards.
The guards were on duty, which made the room empty and the perfect place to have his discussion.
He picked up the phone and dialed Samir’s number.
Immediately, Samir answered the call as if he had been waiting for it.
"I was able to find out about the baby’s father."
Samir held his breath.
"It’s Rauf."
Samir cursed.
Now, June wasn’t just tied to the Vassaris but also the Salvadors. Not only was she the heir to the Vassari empire, but she was also pregnant with the heir of the Salvadors.
He needed to do something fast about it.
"What else?"
"Mrs. Serena planned on having her eye surgery soon. Miss Amie might be in danger if she could see before announcing her as the heiress of the Vassari empire."
Another string of curses left his lips. "Do you have any idea when she plans to do it?"
"No, sir. She has been strict about that information. And there’s no information on the hospital she plans to use."
"So you mean you’re completely useless when you can’t even bring me the information I need."
"But, sir..."
But Samir had had enough.
He wished for something that would lift his spirit.
For some odd reason, every business Amie sent money for him to pursue always ended up in debt. It made him think he was jinxed.
So, what he needed wasn’t just the money but the connection that came with being associated with the Vassaris.
Samir frowned. "I think it’s time I visit the mansion. Is everything okay there?"
"It was good. Apart from the fact that Miss Amie was attacked yesterday by some stranger."
"What? Is she okay? Did she sustain any sort of injury that might require her to be hospitalized?"
"No, sir. Miss Amie was able to defend herself a bit, but it wasn’t the same with Miss June."
"June was also attacked?"
"Yes, sir."
Samir frowned. "Is someone trying to target me?"
That wouldn’t be a surprise. With his business failing and his debts piling up, his lenders might think it was best to attack his daughters to get to him.
Whoever it was had just made a big mistake, thinking the Vassaris wouldn’t get them for it.
"That’s okay. What I need you to do is find the hospital where Serena’s surgery would take place and the date she intended on having it."
"Of course, sir."
After giving him more information about what was happening in the mansion, he finally hung up.
Gerald sighed. He regretted not following Amie out, but thankfully, she was able to fend the attacker off herself.
Just as he opened the door, someone else also came in.
