Chapter 71 - Chapter 71: Getting the Dress

Chapter 71

June sat in the living room, watching the men work and trying to figure out how her new phone worked when the dress arrived.

She had already successfully sent Ellie a message and planned on getting Chris’s social media accounts.

If she wasn’t allowed to work, at least she could keep herself busy by doing something else.

At first, she had thought it was part of the materials the workers were using in the repair of the mansion.

Not that the mansion needed one.

But after dropping the boxes on the table, the young man who had delivered them remained standing in front of June as if she owed him something.

She expected him to leave like the rest of the people who had come to drop off the materials.

June paused from what she was doing on her phone and gave him her attention.

"How may I help you?"

The man swallowed, his eyes dancing across June’s face. "Good day. I’m asking for Miss Amie and Miss June. I need to confirm the order fits them perfectly."

June narrowed her gaze at him. "What order?"

"I’m sorry, but I can’t disclose the information to a stranger. I wouldn’t mind if you could help me call them."

June ignored the way he was staring at her. "I’m June. If there’s anything you want to say, you can say it to me."

For the slightest moment, the man’s eyes widened in surprise. "I’m sorry, ma’am. I never knew I’d meet you sitting here casually."

June shrugged.

She was only taking her doctor’s instructions seriously.

As if to buttress his apology, he started unwrapping one of the boxes.

June remained sitting, watching him. She had placed the phone beside her, having suddenly lost all interest in it.

The man’s hands worked effortlessly on the package, as if he had been doing this forever. When he was done, he pulled out a beautiful dress.

June let out a gasp.

Surprised, she blinked at the dress.

She hadn’t expected anything because she hadn’t ordered anything.

She looked at the man again.

"The dress is from..." She let her question hang, the people working behind them nothing but background noise.

"Mrs. Vassari. I believe she said something about the introduction dresses."

She could see the pride in the man’s eyes just by looking at the dress.

Before June could respond, Amie burst into the room with a scream.

"Is that the dress?"

Her eyes were wide as if she had been expecting the dress.

She almost pushed the young man out of the way, but before she could snatch the dress from June, June lifted it out of her reach.

"That’s yours?"

There was no way she would let Amie’s hands grip something so beautiful.

Amie’s gaze moved to the other box. She picked it up while eyeing the dress in June’s hand.

"Why do you have to get a dress too? It wasn’t as if you’re the one being introduced."

She turned to leave, but said, "I guess you’re doing a good job being Chris’s sugar baby. It’s why he is willing to spend this much on you."

And with that, she left, carrying the big box with her.

The young man opened his mouth to say something, but Amie was already gone before he could form a word.

He sighed. "I was supposed to check if there would be a need for any adjustments."

June, whose cheek was red from being embarrassed by Amie in front of the young man, waved her hand.

"Don’t bother about her. I’m sure if she has any complaints, she will be at your establishment first thing in the morning."

The young man doubted it, but there was no point in arguing with a young woman.

So, instead, he changed the topic. "Do you need me to help you with anything? You can change and see if you need any adjustments."

June shook her head. "I think this will be perfect. I don’t need any adjustments at all."

Glad that his work was all done, the man disappeared with the rest of the people working in the living room.

Out of excitement over something new, June picked up her phone and carried the box to her room.

She knew the introduction was happening soon, but she had no idea exactly when.

After keeping the box in a safe place in her room, she decided to question Chris.

He was the only one who could give her more information about the introduction.

She knew there was going to be an introduction, but she had thought it would take a while. She also remembered Chris saying he had plans for Amie before the introduction.

She got to his office door and knocked on it.

There was no way for an outsider to gain access without Chris’s approval.

The door opened, and Chris peeped out of it. When he saw June, a wide smile spread across his lips, and he opened the door wider for her.

"I was just about to come check on you. How are you?" he said, leading her to the couch in his office.

June sat with her hands placed beside her. "I have been idle, but apart from that, I think I am fine."

Chris chuckled. He could tell she was itching to do something. But there was time for everything, and this was the time for her to just rest.

"You said you were coming to look for..." she asked. She wanted to know what Chris had to tell her before she broached the topic of the introduction.

Chris nodded. "Yes. I know you had a long day yesterday, and you might be hoping to sleep or rest today."

June sat up, almost reaching the edge of the chair.

"Yes."

Except she didn’t feel like sleeping or resting, but there was no point interrupting Chris.

"Well, something came up, and I thought you might want to go."

"What’s that?" she asked, hating the suspense Chris was giving her.

"Mother is going for her surgery tomorrow. She needs to get to the hospital today so she can be prepared for the surgery, but they need a family member to stay with her." Chris actually looked at her nervously. "I don’t know if you will like to come with us."

June almost fell from the chair.

Thankfully, she was holding the edge of the chair, and that had helped keep her from falling.

"Are you serious?"

Chris looked everywhere but at her. "I’ll understand if you don’t want to come and would like to rest..."

Before he could go on, June hit his shoulder lightly.

"Of course, I’ll like to come. I can pack my night bag right now."

A smile curled up Chris’s lips. He hadn’t known what to expect from her, but seeing her accept so easily brought a sort of relief to him.

"When are we going?" June asked, the excitement already rolling off her. She had temporarily forgotten about what she had come to ask.

"Oh! We still have till evening to prepare. She will be spending the night at the hospital so the doctors can check on her."

June nodded. Then suddenly, she froze.

"What about Amie?"

Chris hissed. "She doesn’t have to know anything. We’re keeping it a secret from everyone."

June thought about it before nodding. Then she remembered how Amie and Serena were getting close.

"Are you sure Mother wouldn’t tell her?"

Chris shook his head. "I told Mother to make it a surprise for her."

"Is that why the introduction dresses were delivered?"

Chris’s eyes lit up. "The dresses have been brought. Do you like it?"

Like it?

June rolled her eyes. "I love it. I was so surprised because I wasn’t expecting anything like that."

Satisfied by her response, June moved towards his chair and settled into it.

"I’m glad you like it. You should look your best because you’re going to be the star of that day."

"And Amie? She also got a dress?"

Chris chuckled. "I also have a surprise for her."

June felt she knew exactly what he planned for Amie. And the last topic she wanted to discuss was Amie.

She didn’t care if she was embarrassed or not, as long as she didn’t have to see Amie again. June would surely be glad.

"And if you don’t mind, I also invited your father," Chris added, cutting off her thoughts.

June froze.

Handling Amie was a different issue, but also handling her father, June didn’t think she could.

The man had been a constant source of pain for her while growing up.

The current position of having no idea what he was up to, and him having no idea what she was up to, pleased her more than she had anticipated.

She frowned at Chris.

"Do you need to?"

Chris could tell she didn’t want him. He sighed.

"If we didn’t invite him, it would feel like we are scared of him. And trust me..." He focused his gaze on June. "Vassaris aren’t scared of anyone."

His voice was laced with conviction, and June was nodding.

"I want them both to see you claiming the position they tried to steal from you."
