After her call with Chris, June moved to the window to see if she could see anyone from the mansion, but it was just the guards walking around.
A bitter smile laced her lips.
She could bet they had no idea someone was looking at them from the next building.
After a while, she closed the window and moved outside.
Wanting to get herself familiar with her new environment, she walked around, looking at the different rooms. She didn’t open any of them to check inside. She only took note of where everything was.
She went outside to check the surroundings.
The little dog that had greeted her the previous day was barking in the yard.
June bent down to pick him up again. She ruffled his fur while wondering when Rauf had actually started caring about animals.
Whenever she had brought up the idea of having an animal when they were married, Rauf had always insisted that her company was more than enough.
But now, he had this.
"Come on, cutie. Let’s go get you something to eat."
Finally, she felt at ease knowing there was something to keep her busy.
But as she planned to go back inside, she came across Henson.
Henson held a small file that made it look like he had been taking notes. Apart from asking the questions Rauf wanted, she hardly knew how she was supposed to communicate with him.
But before she could say anything, he called her.
"Ma’am, the boss told me you will be interviewing the staff. I want to know when to schedule the interviews."
June stared at him.
She didn’t think she would ever get used to being called ma’am, but there was no point correcting him again.
When Rauf had told her about the staff, she had overlooked it, but seeing that he had informed Henson, she could tell he was serious about it.
"Well, since I’m still on break from work, I don’t mind doing it tomorrow."
Henson nodded.
"Okay, ma’am."
June smiled at him. Henson was too polite to her.
She was about to leave when she remembered there were no groceries in the kitchen. With the building not having any staff yet, she would need to get some things herself.
She stopped Henson from going far.
"I’ll need a car to go out."
Henson looked around in confusion.
"I’m sorry, ma’am, but we need to inform the boss first."
June sighed.
She knew what she had promised, so there was no point in trying to be stubborn.
"Fine. Lead me to him."
Henson, who had just left Chris’s office, wasn’t particularly eager to return there, especially if his boss still had that strange smile on his face.
But having no choice, he turned and led her back to Rauf’s office.
He knocked once before opening the door and going in.
June followed behind him immediately.
Rauf, who first saw Henson, was about to ask what he had forgotten when his eyes fell on June.
He sat up.
Was his luck still running?
She had actually come to see him again.
"Ma’am," Henson said, planning to leave the room so they could have a private conversation.
But June stopped him.
"What I am about to ask will only take a few seconds. Wait."
Henson looked back at Rauf for instructions.
Rauf nodded slightly, and Henson decided to stay. He waited by the door, trying to distance himself from the conversation as much as possible.
June took her seat in the same chair she had sat in when they drew up the contract.
"Is there anything you need?" Rauf asked, trying to start a conversation.
June looked at anything but him.
"I need to go out to get some groceries."
Rauf started closing the files in front of him.
"Yeah, sorry about that. I should have bought things like that for the house."
June paused.
She hadn’t expected him to apologize.
"It’s fine. I can just go and be back before noon."
Rauf nodded.
"I know, but why don’t we order it in?"
What Henson had just told him was fresh in his mind. So, he could imagine what might happen if he let her out alone.
She shook her head.
"No. There are some things I need to see before deciding what to buy. I can’t just order them in."
Silence.
"Fine. If you don’t want me out of the mansion alone, I don’t mind going with a guard," June added.
She had compromised enough.
Rauf jumped up with an understanding nod.
"Great. I don’t really need to put several guards on you. I’ll be accompanying you to the mall to get the groceries."
Both Henson and June stared at him as if he had lost his mind.
Henson stepped forward.
"Sir, I can actually guard ma’am. I promise not to let anything harm her."
But Rauf wasn’t listening. His eyes were on the woman in front of him.
He could tell the wheels in her head were turning.
She had probably not thought this would be the solution to her going out.
"Is it really necessary? I’m sure you’re busy or something."
Rauf nodded.
This was one of those golden opportunities that he couldn’t just throw away.
His four-day countdown had started from now, and he would be damned if he let go of any opportunity that brought them together.
Who knew when she would be willing to stand beside him again?
"You don’t have to worry about me. I’ll blend into the background perfectly. You’ll have no idea I am there. Just to keep you safe until you get what you want."
June frowned at him.
Rauf wasn’t the type of man to blend into the environment. In fact, his presence alone might do exactly the opposite of blending in.
Seeing that he had already decided what he wanted to do, she sighed.
"Fine."
She muttered beneath her breath, "Let’s see how easy it is for you to blend in."
Rauf nodded.
"Great. Let me change out of this."
He remembered Henson.
"Henson, you’re dismissed."
Henson walked out of the room as if he were in a trance.
June waited for him in the living room, and when he returned after changing, she knew blending into the environment was not an option.
